The Weather in Portugal

The Republic of Portugal lies to the north of the Equator at latitude 39º30´ and longitude 8º00´west of Greenwich Meridian. The climate throughout Portugal is mostly temperate due to its sea coast. However, inland weather can be harsh in some areas. Most places are sunny but can turn chilly in the evenings. The city of Lisbon boasts of one of the warmest temperatures in Europe.

Portuguese summers tend to be sunny and temperatures continue to be favorable right through autumn. Maximum summer temperatures hover around 85 degrees. Regular summer temperatures range from 50 to 60 degrees range. For this reason the summertime proves to be a favored season for tourists. Most people visit Portugal to enjoy the warm breeze and sunny afternoons. It does not take much time to acquire a tan in such weather. The month of July can prove to be dry.

Summer evenings can get quite chilly in the evenings, dependent upon the direction of the Atlantic winds, and tourists are advised to pack windbreakers and jackets. The most conducive and popular travel season is between May and October. Most of Portugal boasts of a temperate climate while some cities are known to have extreme weather conditions during summer.

Winters prove to be moderately cooler with bouts of rain that may be accompanied by thunder. This can be experienced from November to March. Certain cities receive excess rainfall, which makes it soggy and depressing and altogether unfit for a visit. Certain regions boast of an encouraging ski season from January to March.

It is advisable for tourists to gather adequate information regarding weather conditions before they start their journey. The meteorological department may provide weather forecasts for the entire journey period. Apart from this, regular weeklong forecasts are available online and during news telecasts on television and radio.
